ABSTRACT. Biosynthetic genes (sin genes) of sinefungin, a
transmethylase inhibitor, antifungal and antiparasitic
nucleoside antibiotic produced by Streptomyces incarnatus,
were shotgun cloned into Streptomyces lividans. The genes are
clustered on a 14 kb fragment of DNA. The expression of the
sin gene cluster in S. lividans leads to the production of a
sinefungin-like antibiotic. The compound has antifungal and
antiparasitic activities in vitro. The expression of the gene
cluster in S.lividans and E. coli causes an astringent-like
response.
