ABSTRACT. Cells of several isolates of Nocardia, Rhodococcus and
Mycobacterium were hydrophobic as determined by the microbial
adherence to hydrocarbons (MATH) assay. However their
hydrophobicity varied with both culture age and the media in
which they were grown. The possible role of cell surface
hydrophobicity in the ability of some of these isolates to cause
and stabilize foams in activated sludge plants is discussed.
