ABSTRACT. The natural population of Streptomyces hygroscopicus
strain 111-81 is heterogeneous. Of the several morphological
variants present, the most abundant (main, 88.6%) resembles
the parent strain. Following in frequency are white,
oligosporic, asporogenic and nocardia-like types. Differences
in the morphological, cultural, physiological, biochemical
properties and antibiotic production between the original
strain and the variants are described.
