ABSTRACT. Biological characteristics and antibiotic production
of Streptomyces hygroscopicus strains isolated from Bulgarian
soils were studied. Differences in morphological, cultural,
physiological and biochemical properties are described. All
the strains produce non-polyenic macrolide antibiotic
complexes and some other antibiotics. The changed antibiotic
spectrum of the cultures reflects the heterogeneity and broad
adaptation capability of the species.
