Seed Production and Quality in Four Poaceaes. Effects of Cutting with Different Frequency and at Different Phenological Stages Johnston, Myrna R.; Olivares, Alfredo & Laura, Jorge Abstract The effect of cutting frequency and phenological stage at cutting on production and quality of seeds was studied on Bromus berteroanus Colla, Hordeum murinum L., Avena barbata Pott ex Link, and Vulpia myuros (L.) C.C. Gmel. The trials were held in a greenhouse under controlled conditions and without water restriction. The phenological stages of the cutting for each species were: first pair of leaves, beginning of tillering, and beginning of floral stem elongation. Frequency included cuts each time the plant produced the first pair of leaves (n=3), and cuts at the beginning of tillering (n=2). The quality of seeds (germination, viability, and vigor), and number of clusters of fruit and seeds were evaluated. Production of fruit and seeds in the four species decreased significantly (P<0.01) with cuts during the vegetative phase, excepting V. myuros, whose greatest decrease (P<0.01) occurred with cuts at the beginning of the elongation of the floral stem. Seed quality was affected variably, as well the weight of 100 seeds decreased (P<0.01) in three species, excepting A. barbata; viability showed little decrease, but increased in V. myuros (P<0.01). Producción y Calidad de Semillas en Cuatro Poaceas. Efecto de Cortes con Distintas Frecuencias y en Diversas Etapas Fenológicas Johnston, Myrna R.; Olivares, Alfredo & Laura, Jorge Resumen Se estudió el efecto de frecuencias y de la etapa fenológica de corte en la producción y calidad de semillas de Bromus berteroanus Colla, Hordeum murinum L., Avena barbata Pott ex Link, and Vulpia myuros (L.) C.C. Gmel . Los ensayos se mantuvieron en condiciones controladas de invernadero y sin restricción hídrica. Los estados fenológicos del corte aplicados a cada especie fueron: al primer par de hojas; inicio de macollo e inicio de elongación del tallo floral. La frecuencia incluyó cortes cada vez que la planta emitía al primer par de hojas (total tres) y cortes al inicio de macollos (total dos). Se evaluó calidad de semillas (germinación, viabilidad y vigor), número de inflorescencias de frutos y semillas. La producción de frutos y semillas en las cuatro especies disminuyó significativamente (P<0,01) con cortes en fase vegetativa, con excepción de Vulpia myuros cuya mayor disminución (P<0,01) se produjo con cortes al inicio de elongación del tallo floral. La calidad de semillas fue afectada en grados variables, así el peso de 100 semillas se redujo en tres de ellas (P<0,01) con excepción de Avena barbata; la viabilidad presentó escasa reducción pero aumentó en Vulpia myuros (P<0,01).
