FROM THE PRESIDENT
Agricultural Biotechnology Needs Investment Not Additional Regulation
I was recently browsing on the world wide web and came across a list of
`Agricultural Biotechnology Products Expected on the Market Within Six
Years'. There were over twenty-five different types of product ranging from
late ripening fruits (bananas, strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes),
vegetables with enhanced properties (such as the potato with higher density
starch that when deep fried takes up less fat; and peppers that are sweeter
firmer and tastier) and of course a range of disease resistant or herbicide
resistant crop plants. There was even a tree that had modified lignin,
facilitating its easy removal from cellulose and therefore requiring less
energy and bleaching resulting in benefits to both the paper processor and
the environment.
