This paper considers the role of biotechnology in overcoming problems
caused by the continued growth in world population. World population
pressures impact not only on food supplies, but also on the environment, on
biodiversity issues, and on health. Biotechnology can assist in all these
areas, but one important role of scientists must be to communicate facts to
their fellow citizens. The paper is based on the closing plenary lecture of
the 10th International Biotechnology Symposium in Sydney in August,
1996.
