Ribozymes are nucleic acid molecules which possess catalytic properties.
Their dual ability to catalyze important biological reactions and store
genetic information is thought to have been an essential element for the
early evolution of life. Paradoxically, the evolutionary process has in
turn made them almost obsolete. Can ribozymes now be used to save lives?
Recent advances in biotechnology are promising a role for ribozymes as gene
therapeutics.
