The Contribution of Biotechnologies to Food Production
Sasson, Albert
Abstract
Population growth and the rising trend of the standards of living increase the demand for food and, therefore, make it necessary to increase agricultural production. The mechanization of farm labor, the introduction of chemical products and the genetic engineering of plants have had an important impact on crop yield, but the latter require large capital investments. That is the reason why they have mostly benefited the developed countries. As a consequence, the genetic engineering of plants is the most feasible alternative. And, with the inevitable contribution of biotechnologies, problems related to plant resistance to pests, diseases, and abiotic stress-drought, could, salinity, and poor soils, etc.-, could be solved. These adverse factors have had the heaviest impact on the considerable losses faced by agriculture every year.
