The history of human beings is closely linked to the study of
nature. Among all animal kingdoms, aquatic organisms have
concentrated most attention because of their abundance and
importance as a source of animal protein.
The first ichthyological references are found in the "History of
Animals" of Aristotle (384-322 BC) and in the "Natural History" of
C. Plinio II (29-79 AC). Educated in these principles, scientists
in many countries studied the biology of aquatic organisms.
