A total of 17 research works in the potato crop (
Solanum tuberosum
L.) carried out in the Escuela de IngenieríaAgronómica of Universidad de Oriente have made possible to develop a technological package for this crop in the north area of Monagas state. The results allow to point out that potato's cultivation in the Monagas state practically is disappearing, diminishing over 90 % of the area cultivated in the state, concentrating this cultivation on the Caripe Municipality. Two research work of 17 talk about the crop zonificación, three ones are referred to the utilized seed, tuber-seed weight and plant stand; six works were carried out in order to evaluating the crop fertilization, in the aspects of dose and time of fertilizer application both initial and second fertilization; two works were carried out to evaluate the weed control and two works for the insect control. For the study of the socio-economic aspects, three works were carried out and one work was carried out for postharvest storage. In general, the north area of the Monagas state presents appropiate weather conditions for the potato cultivation, but its topography with slopes of more than 45 ° impedes in many cases the crop sowing. The more appropiate sowing date is in the months of December-January, where low temperatures favor the tuberización and guarantees the harvest in dry time. The utilized seed is imported and tuber-seed weight should be around 45 grams; the best in-row distance is 20 cm. As for fertilization, the better yields were obtained with dose from 100 to 200 kg N/ha, 150 to 288 kg P/ha and 100 and 200 kg de K/ha. The costs of production are distributed: inputs, 66 %; manpower, 19 %; land preparation and fumigation equipment, 13 % and the payment for lease of land, 2 %.
