Pest of Agave Mezcalero: Losses and Damage in Oaxaca, México Aquino Bolaños, Teodulfo; Iparraguirre Cruza, Miguel Angel & Ruiz Vega, Jaime Abstract During 2005 and 2006, the loss and damage caused by the black weevil in mature plants of agave ‘mezcalero’ were determined in the Valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico. Population dynamics was determined as well. The percentage of damage found for Agave tequilana, fluctuated from 0.7% of category 6 (completely damaged head) to 16.9% of damage category 4 (heads with a presence of 16 to 20 spots). For Agave angustifolia Haws, the numbers fluctuated from 0.3% of category 6 (completely damaged head) to 13.3% of damage category 3 (head with a presence of 11 to 15 spots). Loss caused by degrees of advance for A. tequilana ranged from 4 to 19.1 kg/plant, and for A. angustifolia from 5.4 to 30 kg/plant. The heads with a degree of damage 5 had the least weight, the highest number of injuries and the highest number of insects in both species. Also, it was found that the maximum values of the black weevil populations (40 insects per sample) occurred between June and October, period with high humidity level due to more rain and hot weather. Plaga del Agave Mezcalero: Pérdidas y Daños en Oaxaca, México Aquino Bolaños, Teodulfo; Iparraguirre Cruza, Miguel Angel & Ruiz Vega, Jaime Resumen En los años 2005 y 2006 se determinaron daños y pérdidas ocasionadas por el picudo negro en plantas maduras de maguey mezcalero ( Agave angustifolia Haw y Agave tequilana Weber), en la región de los Valles Centrales de Oaxaca, México. Además, se estableció la fluctuación poblacional de este insecto. Los porcentajes de daños encontrados en A. tequilana, variaron de 0,7% de categoría 6 (piña totalmente dañada) a 16,9% con daño de categoría 4 (piñas con presencia de 16-20 manchas). Para A. angustifolia, fueron de 0,3% de categoría 6 (piña totalmente dañada) a 13,3% con daño de categoría 3 (piña con presencia de 11 - 15 manchas). Las pérdidas encontradas por grados de avance, para A. tequilana fueron de 4 a 19,1 kg/planta y para A. angustifolia de 5,4 a 30 kg/planta. Las piñas con grado de afectación 5 presentaron el menor peso, el mayor número de lesiones e insectos por piña en las dos especies. Se encontró que los valores máximos de poblaciones del picudo (40 insectos por muestreo) ocurrieron en los meses de junio a octubre, periodo más húmedo y cálido del año.
