Agronomic and phytosanitary assessment of bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) germplasm in the Ecuadorian humid tropic Garcès Fiallos, Felipe Rafael; Zabala Palacios, Ronal Gabriel; Diaz Coronel, Teofilo Gorki & Vera Avilès, Daniel Federico Abstract The objective was to determine the agronomic and phytosanitary characters on F5 promising lines of cross Cf1 0-14-1-2 x EVG-06-248, an advanced line and three commercial varieties of beans during the dry season in the canton Quevedo, Ecuador. Bean materials tested in this experiment were 17 promising lines F5 by crossing Cf4 (Cf1-0-14-1-2 x EVG-06-248), a promising advanced UICYT obtained in (EVG - 06 - 103) and three commercial varieties (Cuarentón, INIAP-473 and CAL-96). The variables evaluated were: agronomic traits [days to flowering and flower color, plant height and insertion of legume, grain color and shape and grain yield (kg ha-1)] and phytosanitary ones [incidence (%) and severity (%) of rust ( Uromyces appendiculatus ) and web blight ( Rhizoctonia solani )]. The data were subjected to analysis of variance using a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 21 treatments and three replications. For comparison among treatment means, the multiple range test of Tukey at 5% was used. Most agronomic variables evidenced statistically significant differences among means of bean materials tested and also variation in character among lines tested was detected, showing different performance. Results will help the breeding of this crop in this part of Ecuador. The line Cf4 0-0-4-8 showed low severity of rust and web blight and performance like the best control variety. Evaluación agronómica y fitosanitaria de germoplasma de fréjol ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) en el trópico húmedo Ecuatoriano Garcès Fiallos, Felipe Rafael; Zabala Palacios, Ronal Gabriel; Diaz Coronel, Teofilo Gorki & Vera Avilès, Daniel Federico Resumen El objetivo fue determinar las características agronómicas y fitosanitarias de líneas promisorias F5 del cruzamiento Cf1- 0- 14-1-2 x EVG-06-248, una línea avanzada y tres variedades comerciales de fréjol (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) durante la época seca en el cantón Quevedo, Ecuador. Los materiales de fréjol evaluados en este experimento, fueron 17 líneas promisorias F5 del cruzamiento Cf4 (Cf1-0-14-1-2 x EVG-06-248), una línea promisoria avanzada obtenida en la UICYT (EVG - 06 - 103) y tres variedades comerciales (Cuarentón, INIAP-473 y CAL-96). Las variables evaluadas fueron agronómicas [días a floración, color de flor, altura de planta e inserción de legumbre, color y forma del grano y, rendimiento de grano (kg ha-1)] y fitosanitarias [incidencia (%) y severidad (%) de roya ( Uromyces appendiculatus ) y mustia hilachosa ( Rhizoctonia solani ). El experimento se analizó bajo un diseño de bloque al azar y la comparación de medias se hizo con la prueba de Tukey. En la mayoría de variables evaluadas (agronómicas) se evidenció diferencias estadísticas significativas entre las medias de los materiales de fréjol evaluados y variación en los caracteres evaluados entre las líneas evaluadas, mostrando un comportamiento diferenciado de los mismos, lo que ayudará al fitomejoramiento de esta leguminosa en esta parte del país. La línea Cf4 0-0-4-8 presentó baja severidad de roya y mustia hilachosa y rendimiento semejante a la mejor variedad testigo.
