Abstract

Morphological and cytogenetic features were evaluated in an experimental hybrid obtained using Aloe vera check for this species in other resources as female parent and A. jacksonii check for this species in other resources as pollen donator, to characterize this new genotype, in order to determinate its ornamental and/or agronomic potential, and cytogenetic aspects related to reproduction. Conventional methods to the morphometric study of succulent plants and cytogenetic analysis protocols established by the authors were applied. Progeny showed intermediate expression in most vegetative traits, except for flower color (hybrid = A. jacksonii), as well as, number of suckers, number and area of leaf spots, variable in which the hybrid exceeded the expression of both parents. Root tips showed bimodal karyotype 2n=2x=14=8L+6S=2L(sm)+6L(st)+6S(sm) in A. vera, 2n=4x=28=16L+12S=3L(sm)+13L(st)+3S(m)+9S(sm) in A. jacksonii, and 2n=3x=21=12L+9S= 3L(sm)+9L(st)+1S(m)+8S(sm) chromosomes in the hybrid. Abnormalities in more than 50% of the pollen mother cells were identified in the progeny, being more frequent univalents and chromosomic adherence in prophase I, dicentric bridges with or without acentric fragments in anaphase and telophase I-II, and one, two, or three additional microspores. After flowering, no fruit and seeds were observed in all three genotypes. Although it was clear agronomic superiority of A. vera, the exuberance of vegetative attributes in artificial hybrid give considerable ornamental value.
