Morphological differential characters of fruit, seed and seedling of six palms in a cloudy understory of Lara state, Venezuela

Abstract
The identification of palm species at the seedling stage is difficult. In order to have a practical approach for recognition by
the ecologist and horticulturist, and considering the peculiarity of these seedlings to maintain long adhered its fruit-seed,
the morphological aspects at the fruit, seed (pyrene) and seedling were studied to differentiate six native species in a cloudy
forest at Lara state, Venezuela. The size and shape of the seed, and the endosperm (homogeneous or ruminate) were
important to separate the species Chamaedorea pinnatifrons
(Jacq.) Oersted, Geonoma undata
Klotzsch, Geonoma orbignyana
Mart., Hyospathe elegans
Mart., Prestoea acuminata
(Willd.) H. E. Moore and Wettinia praemorsa
(Willd.)
Wess. Boer. Although all showed hypogeal-proximal germination and criptocotilar seedling, they differ in the position of
the seed (above, front or below) at the epicotyl-root node, and the size of the cotyledon sheath. Except W. praemorsa, which
seedling presents the first eophyll monofoliate, the others five species are with bifoliote ones. However, the two leaflets
(partially united in a V form) vary in proportions and form (apex, base, symmetry, edges and venation). Two trends were
identified for the proportional length between the distal portion of the free leaflet, and the join portion, corresponding to a
long V-type (free portion about 2/3 long) and a short v-type (similar free and joined portion, 1/2). The combination of some
morphological characters led to the development of key conformed by macro-level descriptors in order to recognize at the
field the seedlings for the six palm species that inhabit the understory studied.
