Abstract

According to different studies, rabbit meat has high nutritional value and plays an active role on human health due to its dietary properties. A way to comparatively evaluate the effect of supplementing commercial balanced feed (CBF) with mataraton ( Gliricidia sepium check for this species in other resources ) foliage and palm-press fiber ( Elaeis guineensis check for this species in other resources ) in the nutritional quality of meat rabbit ( Oryctolagus cuniculus check for this species in other resources ), a research was conducted with an experimental design of randomized blocks with three treatments (diets) and three replications (blocks) with sampling three replicates per repetition, where mestizos 27 male rabbits were used during the post-weaning growth, divided into three treatments: a control group (T0), animals supplied only with CBF, and two supplemented treatments with mataraton foliage and palm-press fiber at 30 and 10% (T1), and 10 and 30% (T2) proportions, respectively, to later compare the effect of diet on the quality parameters of the meat from these animals. Upon completion of this preliminary investigation, samples of meat from different animals in treatment were evaluated for their physicochemical properties [pH, titratable acidity, and water holding capacity (WHC)] found that, according to analysis of variance, no significant differences (p > 0.05) for pH (5.64 to 5.70 ), titratable acidity (0.52 to 0.58%), and WHC (18.15 to 20.46%), indicating that regardless of the diet used, supplementing CBF with mataraton/palm-press fiber or not, the rabbit meats obtained are similar as food in terms of these physicochemical properties. These results suggest that tropical agronomic materials used in this study, could be an alternative for the production of rabbit meat for human consumption.
