Abstract

Castor bean ( Ricinus communis check for this species in other resources L.) is an industrial oil crop with optimal social and environmental benefits. Despite its wide adaptability, environmental influences the performance of cultivars, which led to establish regional comparative tests to select cultivars better adapted to specific areas based on their performance in grain and oil. Six cultivars were tested in five environments of Falcón and Aragua states (2008-2010). Each location and year were considered as an environment. Trials were planted in a randomized complete block with four replications. Traits evaluated were plant height at first harvest, main raceme length, 100 fruits weight, 100 seeds weight, number of fruits of primary raceme, seed weight of primary raceme, grain yield and oil yield. The combined analysis showed significant cultivar x environment interaction indicating differential performance of genotypes in tested environments. This led difficult to recommend a specific cultivar and it was necessary to use the general mean, the superior mean (%/Mean) and the genetic variation coefficient (CVg). The mean yield was higher in Maracay than in Falcon. Maracay (2009) was found to be the most favorable environment. Grain and oil yields of cultivars follow the same tendency. The performance showed cultivar Cola de Caballo with the greatest variation and Enano CIA with the most uniform behavior among environments. Despite the significant genotype x environment interaction, some cultivars distinguished for grain and oil yield in several tested environments.

Resumen

El tártago ( Ricinus communis check for this species in other resources L.) es una oleaginosa industrial con óptimos beneficios sociales y ambientales.
