Heritabilities, phenotypic correlations, genetic correlations and repeatability of production variables in Argentine llamas Frank, E. N.; Hick, M. V. H.; Molina, M. G. & Caruso, L. M. Abstract The objectives of this work were to determine heritabilities, phenotypic, and genetic correlations between production traits and to report means and standard deviations. The data comprised 2820 records, from 450 founding females and 45 founding males involving 816 measured animals. The llamas came from three different localities and the variables studied were: fleece weight (annual shearing), fleece strip weight (fleece weight predictor), staple length, mean fibre diameter, fibre diameter coefficient of variation, total medulation grade and thoracic circumference as an animal size measure. Genetic (co)variances, heritabilities and genetic and phenotypic correlations were obtained through a multivariate animal model with repeatabilities, using VCE4 (Variance Components Estimation) software. Fixed effects of the mixed model included: year of production, year of sampling (repeated), animal age at sampling, flock, coat color and type of fleece. The heritabilities and correlations obtained were generally lower than other estimates made out of the altiplano areas, but in concordance with values from the altiplano areas. It was concluded that important selection responses can be expected if these traits are used as selection criteria. The fact that the fleece strip weight can be used to predict fleece weight is an important finding, given the high genetic and phenotypic correlations between these two variables. The correlations between fleece weight, mean fibre diameter and body size were unfavorable. Keywords Fleece, Genetic parameters, Lamas, Production variables

Heredabilidades, correlaciones fenotípicas, correlaciones genéticas y repetibilidades de variables productivas en llamas argentinas Frank, E. N.; Hick, M. V. H.; Molina, M. G. & Caruso, L. M. Resumen El objetivo de ese trabajo fue determinar heredabilidades, correlaciones fenotípicas y genéticas entre los caracteres e informar medias y desviaciones típicas de las variables productivas. Un total de 2 850 registros, pertenecientes a 450 hembras fundadoras y 45 machos fundadores totalizaron 816 animales medidos. Las llamas pertenecían a tres localidades distintas y las variables fueron: peso de vellón (esquila anual), peso de parche (para predecir peso de vellón), largo de mecha, diámetro medio de fibra, coeficiente de variación de diámetro, grado de medulación total y perímetro torácico como medida del tamaño del animal. Las (co)varianzas genéticas, heredabilidades y correlaciones genéticas y fenotípicas se obtuvieron a través de un modelo animal multicaracter con repetibilidad, usando el programa VCE4 que estima componentes de varianzas REML. El modelo base para describir cada dato incluyó año de producción, año de obtención de las muestras (repetidas), edad del animal al momento del muestreo, plantel al que pertenecía, color de la capa y tipo de vellón. Las heredabilidades y correlaciones en general resultaron más bajas que otras estimadas fuera del altiplano y en concordancia con los datos provenientes del altiplano. Se concluye que pueden esperarse respuestas impor- tantes a la selección si se eligen estas variables como criterios de selección. Resulta particularmente importante el uso de la variable peso de parche para determinar peso de vellón por sus correlaciones genética y fenotípica altas con éste.
