DOWN'S SYNDROME
Ingeborg Barišić
Abstract
Down's syndrome is one of the most common causes of mental retardation.
Although the understanding of its pathogenesis is still incomplete,
there has been an improvement in understanding of the spectrum
of medical issues related to this disorder. Medical management
requires an organized multidisciplinary approach and anticipatory
guidance in the treatment and prevention of clinical conditions that
occur at a higher prevalence during the lifetime of a person with
Down's syndrome. Current and comprehensive information about
medical problems in individuals with trisomy 21 is of importance in
counselling parents and planning health care provision. With new
medical advances, early intervention, special educational programmes
and proper health care services, the quality of life of individuals with
Down's syndrome is considerably improved.
