Abstract

In this paper, the fifth of a series dealing with the survey of freshwater gastropods of the state of Rio de Janeiro, the results of collections carried out in the Norte Fluminense Mesoregion from 2002 to 2003 are presented and revealed the occurrence of 19 species: Antillorbis nordestensis check for this species in other resources ; Burnupia check for this species in other resources sp.; Biomphalaria tenagophila check for this species in other resources ; Drepanotrema anatinum check for this species in other resources ; Drepanotrema cimex check for this species in other resources ; Drepanotrema depressissimum check for this species in other resources ; Drepanotrema lucidum check for this species in other resources ; Ferrissia check for this species in other resources sp.; Gundlachia ticaga check for this species in other resources ; Gundlachia check for this species in other resources sp.; Heleobia check for this species in other resources sp.; Hebetancylus moricandi check for this species in other resources ; Idiopyrgus check for this species in other resources sp.; Lymnaea columella check for this species in other resources ; Melanoides tuberculatus check for this species in other resources ; Physa acuta check for this species in other resources ; Physa marmorata check for this species in other resources ; Pomacea sordida check for this species in other resources , and Pomacea check for this species in other resources sp. Concerning the snail hosts of Schistosoma mansoni check for this species in other resources only B. tenagophila was found, in contrast with other previuosly studied mesoregions. No specimens were found harbouring larval forms of S. mansoni although different kinds of cercariae had been observed. An account about the current schistosomiasis transmission sites in this Mesoregion is presented as well.
