en Endovascular treatment of brain aneurysms. Preliminary experience in Venezuela.
Castillo, María Ariana García & González, Bernardo Lander

Abstract

Introduction: Rupture of an aneurysm is the most frequent cause of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Surgical clipping being the standard treatment for ruptured cerebral aneurysms, with endovascular embolization as a new alternative.
Objective: To review the preliminary experience at the Hospital Universitario de Caracas in the endovascular treatment of ruptured cerebral aneurysms, as compared to the standard surgical clipping.
Methods: between august 2000 and march 2001 20 ruptured aneurysms were embolized with Guglielmi detachable coils, comparing with 20 cerebral aneurysms surgically treated.
Results: Technical success of 100% was obtained in both groups. Presence of complications was 15% in both groups. No significant differences about age, sex, consultation motive or antecedents were found. The permanence time in the intensive care unit and in general care showed a significant difference (p< 0.5), being shorter for the embolized cases.
Conclusion: the endovascular embolization is an excellent alternative for ruptured cerebral aneurysms, with identical morbimortality rate to that reported for surgical treatments.
