Abstract

The dermatophytes are a group of filamentous fungi, capable of invading and colonizing keratinized tissue: skin, hair and nails of humans and animals. This condition is considered a major health problem at present. The aim was to determine the presence of dermatophytes, among children of an Educational Unit of the Municipality Naguanagua, Carabobo State, Venezuela, during the period 2009. 35 children aged between three and eigth years of both genders, of which 25 were male and 10 female, with injuries to hair, skin and nails, were studied. The methods used for identification of fungi were: Wood´s lamp, direct examination with KOH to 10 or 20%, microculture and blue solution Lactofen. Microsporum canis (5,7%) in hair and skin in two children and Trichophyton rubrum (2,9%) in skin in a girl were isolated. Male children were more affected than girls.

Resumen

Los dermatofitos son un grupo de hongos filamentosos, capaces de invadir y colonizar tejido(s) queratinizado(s): piel, pelo y uñas de humanos y animales. Tal afección es considerada un problema sanitario importante en la actualidad. El objetivo fué determinar la presencia de dermatofitos, en niños de una Unidad Educativa del Municipio Naguanagua, Estado Carabobo, Venezuela, durante el período 2009. Para ello se evaluaron 35 niños en edades entre tres y ocho años de ambos géneros, de los cuales 25 fueron del género masculino y 10 del género femenino, con lesiones en pelo, piel y uñas. Los métodos utilizados para la identificación de los hongos fueron: lámpara de Wood, examen directo con KOH al 10 o 20 %, el microcultivo y solución de azul de Lactofenol. Se aisló Microsporum canis (5,7%) en cabello y piel en dos niños y Trichophyton rubrum (2,9%) en piel en una niña. Se concluye que el género masculino fue el más afectado con lesiones por dermatofitos en comparación con el género femenino.
