Resumen

La glucemia en ayunas alterada (GAA) o prediabetes es un estado metabólico intermedio, entre la glucemia normal y la diabetes mellitus, su presencia detecta futuros casos de diabetes mellitus tipo 2. Objetivo: Determinar la frecuencia de GAA en adolescentes de dos unidades educativas, del estado Táchira-Venezuela. Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo, transversal y de campo, participaron 146 adolescentes entre 12 y 17 años, 63% de sexo femenino y 37% masculino. Las variables estudiadas fueron sexo, edad, peso, talla, índice de masa corporal, antecedentes familiares y personales, medidas antropométricas y glucemia capilar en ayunas. Resultados: El 9,6% (14/146) presentó GAA, 9 de sexo femenino y 5 de masculino, con mayor frecuencia a los 16 años. 13/14 tenían antecedentes familiares de diabetes y 11/14 de sobrepeso. Conclusión: Se concluye que debe diagnosticarse GAA en los adolescentes para medidas de intervención precoz y prevención de Diabetes Mellitus.

Abstract

Impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or pre-diabetes is a metabolic state intermediate between normal glycemia and diabetes mellitus, its presence detects future cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Objective: To determine the frequency of (IFG) in adolescents from two educational units, of Tachira, Venezuela. Methods: This investigation was designed as a descriptive, transversal and field study. 146 adolescents aged 12 to 17 years, 63% female and 37% male participated in the study. The variables studied were sex, age, weight, height, body mass index, family and personal history, anthropometric and fasting capillary blood glucose measurements. Results: 9.6% (14/146) had IFG, 9 female and 5 male, most often at age 16 years. 13/14 had a family history of diabetes and 11/14 had overweight. Conclusion: We conclude that IFG should be diagnosed in adolescents for early intervention measures and prevention of Diabetes Mellitus.
