Abstract

A study of 85 fecal samples of people from “Cañafistola I” urban community, Ciudad Bolívar, Heres Municipality, Bolívar state, Venezuela in order to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites was performed. Feces were analyzed by direct examination, Kato and spontaneous sedimentation techniques and Kinyoun staining. A total of 64 people (75.3%) were parasitized. Protozoa were more common with 96.6%. Seven species of parasites were diagnosed. Protozoa most prevalent were Blastocystis spp. check for this species in other resources (32.9%) and Giardia intestinalis check for this species in other resources (22.4%). Among the helminth only Trichuris trichiura check for this species in other resources (4.7%) and Ascaris lumbricoides check for this species in other resources (2.3%) were diagnosed. Of infected people (50%) had polyparasitism; the most common associations were Blastocystis spp./ E. nana check for this species in other resources (21.9%) and Blastocystis spp./G. intestinalis (18.8%). In conclusion, a high prevalence of intestinal parasites (75.3%) in the study community was determined, with a predominance of protozoa, especially Blastocystis spp.

Resumen

Se realizó un estudio con 85 muestras fecales procedentes de igual número de habitantes del barrio Cañafistola I, Ciudad Bolívar, Municipio Heres, estado Bolívar, con el objetivo de determinar la prevalencia de parásitos intestinales. Las heces fueron analizadas mediante las técnicas de examen directo, Kato, sedimentación espontánea y coloración de Kinyoun. Un total de 64 personas (75,3%) resultaron parasitados. Los protozoarios fueron más comunes con 96,6%. Siete especies de parásitos fueron diagnósticados. Los protozoarios de mayor prevalencia fueron Blastocystis spp. check for this species in other resources (32,9%) y Giardia intestinalis check for this species in other resources (22,4%). Entre los helmintos solo se diagnosticaron Trichuris trichiura check for this species in other resources (4,7%) y Ascaris lumbricoides check for this species in other resources (2,3%). De los parasitados, la mitad (50%) resultó poliparasitada, siendo la asociacion más común Blastocystis spp./ E. nana check for this species in other resources (21,9%) y Blastocystis spp./ G. intestinalis (18,8%). En conclusión, se determinó una elevada prevalencia de parásitos intestinales (75,3%) en la comunidad estudiada, con predominio de los protozoarios, en especial Blastocystis spp.
