TECHNICAL NOTE - Correlation of scrotal circumference with some seminal quality parameters in creole goat Adolfo C. de la Vega, Rodrigo Ruiz y Oscar R. Wilde Abstract The objective of the present work was to determine the correlation between the scrotal circumference (SC) and some seminal quality parameters in Creole goats in Tucumán (Argentine), the work has been developed in the experimental field of the Faculty of Agronomy and Zootecnia., UNT. It was used a group of twelve goats males of one year old each at the beginning of the experience. The SC was measuring took place every 14 days over 9 months. 48 hs after each measurement the semen was extracted with the use of artificial vaginas. The seminal parameters analyzed were: ejaculated volume (EV), the spermatic concentration (SCo), and the total spermatozoa (TS). The average results obtained and their standard errors of SC, EV, SCo and TS were respectively: 24.4 ± 0.14 cm; 0.59 ± 0.03ml; 6,294 ± 185mill/ml and 3,606 ± 193 millions per ejaculation. The coefficients of correlation between the different seminal parameters and the scrotal circumference were calculated, providing significant results between the latter and EV (r = 0.22; P<0.003) as well as with TS (r = 0.27; P< 0.001). The results obtained enable us to conclude that it is important to take into account the SC at the moment of evaluating a buck, basically because of its relation with the total quantity of sperms. NOTA TÉCNICA - Relación de la circunferencia escrotal con algunos parámetros de calidad seminal en caprinos Criollos de la provincia de Tucumán (Argentina) Adolfo C. de la Vega, Rodrigo Ruiz y Oscar R. Wilde Resumen Con el objetivo de determinar la correlación existente entre la circunferencia escrotal y algunos parámetros de calidad seminal en caprinos Criollos serranos de la provincia de Tucumán (Argentina), se desarrolló el presente trabajo en el Campo Experimental de la Facultad de Agronomía y Zootecnia de la UNT. Se trabajó con un grupo de 12 machos, de un año de edad al inicio de la experiencia. Las mediciones de CE se realizaron cada 14 días, durante nueve meses, y 48 hs después de cada jornada de medición se recolectó el semen con vagina artificial. Los parámetros seminales analizados fueron: volumen eyaculado (VE), concentración espermática (CEsp) y espermatozoides totales (ET). Los valores promedio obtenidos y sus errores estándar para CE, VE, CEsp y ET fueron respectivamente: 24,4 ± 0,14 cm; 0,59 ± 0,03 ml; 6294 ± 185mill/ml y 3606 ± 193 millones por eyaculado. Se calcularon los coeficientes de correlación entre los diferentes parámetros seminales y la circunferencia escrotal, encontrándose valores significativos entre esta y el VE (r=0,22; P<0,003), como así también con los ET (r=0,27; P<0,001). Los resultados obtenidos permiten concluir que resulta importante tener en cuenta la CE al momento de evaluar un semental, fundamentalmente por su relación con el número total de espermatozoides eyaculados.
