Antonio J. Manrique y Ademilson E. Egea S

Abstract

Some colonies of bees, Apis mellifera check for this species in other resources , collect much more propolis than others. This trait could be under genetic control. We investigated this possibility in several experiments, developed from April of 1998 to July of 1998, in three places: Usina Bonfim apiarian at Guariba town, Pradópolis apiarian at Pradópolis town, and the América Farm apiarian at Luiz Antônio town in São Paulo state, Brazil. The objectives were to: measure the population influence on propolis production, and to begin a genetic breeding program of bees to improve propolis production. We worked with 450 colonies divided into: C1: single story standard Langstroth hive, C2: two story hive, and C3: three story hive. In the Pradópolis apiarian, C1 was significantly lower (P<0,05) with a mean of 35.32 g/colony, two times less than the others. The results in the Bonfim apiarian showed that C1 = 49.16g/colony was superior (P<0,05) than C2 = 37.70 g/colony and C3 = 37.00 g/colony. In the America Farm, C2 = 49.95 g/colony was better than C1 and C2. Nine queens were selected to initiate the selection program. The results obtained under these conditions, showed no direct relationship between high population and propolis production.
