Abstract

An experiment was carried out during 86 days to evaluate the influence of yeast culture (Yea-Sacc1026) addition on live weight gain (LWG) of cattle on a diet of grass, poultry litter and wheat middlings. A completely randomized design was used to compare two treatments. with or without 10 g/day of yeast culture sprayed over the concentrate. Sixteen Brahman x Holstein yearlings, eight females and eight males, with an initial weight of 279 kg, which grazed on paddocks of Cynodon lemfuensis check for this species in other resources were stalled during 3 h/day and offered 4 kg/day concentrate with equal amounts of poultry litter and wheat middlings. The animals were balanced between treatments according lo sex and weight. A multifactorial analysis of variance was carried out, with treatment and sex as sources of variation. On treatments with and without yeast culture, concentrate intakes were 2.82 and 2.79 kg DM/day (P>0.05) and LWGs were 0.78 and 0.59 kg/day (P=0.018). At present prices, the use of yeast resulted in a profit increase per animal of Bs. 10,845 during the trial. LWG was higher than results obtained in similar trials, possibly as a result of the relationship between yeast mechanisms of action and diet characteristics, and in these conditions its use is economically justified.
