Abstract

To obtain more information on mataraton ( Gliricidia sepium check for this species in other resources ) as a forage tree legumes from the tropical dry forest, bromatological analyses, changes in mineral content, and in the regrowth rates were evaluated during 3, 6, 9, and 12 months of age. Fifthy plants set as a paddock living fence were sampled during a year from a farm in Urachiche, Yaracuy state, Venezuela. Results showed an increment as plant aged (P<0.05) of the content of dry matter (from 8.75 to 13.39%), lipids (from 2.93 to 4.80%), calcium (from 0.98 to 1.43%), magnesium (from 0.20 to 0.38%), manganese (from 25.00 to 59.00 ppm), and zinc (from 34.67 to 52.00 ppm). However, the level of protein, ash, phosphorous, potassium, and iron decreased (P<0.05) from 28.31 to 20.64%, 8.88 to 7.40%, 0.36 to 0.14%, 2.89 to 0.70% and 192.00 to 135.00 ppm, respectively. The growing rate was 51.0 cm/month. This legume tree offers a high nutritional potential for ruminant feeding and it could be used as protein source to improve ruminant diets.
