Abstract

In order to evaluate the effect of height and frequency of cutting on the yield and crude protein of three perennial peanut ( Arachis pintoi check for this species in other resources ) varieties, a field trail was carried out, at the Borbollon farm, located in Jaji, Merida state, Venezuela, at 1950 m.a.s.l. during two years. A completely randomized blocks design was used, with three replications in a factorial split-split plot treatment arrangement. For the main plot, three varieties (V1:17434, V2:18744 and V3:18749) were randomized, in the secondary plot two frequencies (F1: 35 days and F2:49 days) were applied and in the split-split plot three heights of cutting (H1: 0 cm, H2:5 cm and H3:10 cm) were randomized. For dry mater yield (DMY), differences were detected for height of cutting and the interaction varieties with frequency. The higher yield values were 19578.9 kg DM/ha/year, when perennial peanut was harvested at ground level, decreasing with cuttings heights of 5 and 10 cm, with 9278.5 and 6228.3 kg DM/ ha/year, respectively. In the 49 days of interval, the DM production was 10363 kg DM /ha /year and for 35 days it was 8133 kg DM/ha/year. The regression equation was DMY (kg DM/ha/year)=19578.86 – 2785.72H +145.13H2. Yields of varieties CIAT-17434 and CIAT 18744 increased with the days between cuttings, while CIAT-18798 had a different response. Plant height increment (PHI) was affected significantly (P<0,01) for the height and frequency of cutting , The higher increments values were 6.19 cm for 5 cm and 5.88 cm for 49 days, The regression equation was PHI(cm)=5.15+0.45H-0.05H2. Significant differences in crude protein were detected for varieties and height of cuttings. CIAT 18744 and 18748 varieties were similar in protein content with 18.8 and 18,1%, respectively, higher than 15,8% for the variety CIAT 17434. As a conclusion, dry matter and protein yield of Arachis pintoi, increased according the height of cutting decreased, but plant height increment crude protein value were higher at the treatment of 5 cm.
