Dear Michael,
Thank you for your input. I am in total agreement with you regarding the
need for international funding and with the proposed model of operation for
Bioline International. It is indeed the model we are striving to achieve.
One of the main goals at the World Summit is to educate and to convince
funding and government agencies of the importance of open access to
scientific publications and to provide them with knowledge of alternative
economic models for long term sustainability. Some of these models have been
provided by the Open Society Institute and the documents are available at
this web site:
http://www.soros.org/openaccess/oajguides/index.shtml
We will also be lobbying for funding and research institutions to endorse
the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and
Humanities.
http://www.zim.mpg.de/openaccess-berlin/berlindeclaration.html
As more international agencies understand the importance of open access and
how it could be sustained, the more likely we will be able to obtain long
term support and implement the model you outlined. I will keep you all
posted with regard to progress at the World Summit, and please keep sending
us your thoughts and suggestions.
Sincerely
Leslie

I really want to thank you for your information and to think that we should=
contribute to your ideas for the said conference.
The major constraint of journals from the developing countries is that of s=
ustainability. And that is due to lack of sustainable funding. This major pr=
oblem may be solved by obtaining assistance from international funding sourc=
es after a review of the activities and aim of the journal. Therefore those =
of us from the Journal of Applied Sciences & Environmental Managem=

funding for journals from the developing countries. Modalities for qualifica=
tion for such fund may then be worked out.

Bioline International should spare head that arrangement and work out the p=
rocedures. Funds payable to these journals should go directly to bioline who=
will after deducting administrative expences remit part to the jourmay conc=

ability of these journals will be sustained.

The issue of open access and its importance, particularly for publications =
