FROM THE EDITOR

Martin Playne, Editor

Code Number: au00048

In this issue, we are releasing a comprehensive listing of Australian and New Zealand tertiary institutes offering biotechnology courses, including short courses and diploma and degree courses and postgraduate degrees. This list includes all courses that we are aware of, however, one or two may have slipped through our net. If this is the case, please let me know before 20th November, and we will publish them as an addendum in our December issue. We are also intending to place this training special feature on our website: http://www.aba.asn.au/

Also in this issue are two feature articles, one by Gaye Middleton on the new GM bill, and the other by Keir Bristow on legal issues surrounding “contamination” from GM crops. These articles are supported by information from the Australian and New Zealand Food Authority website on the recently introduced food labelling legislation relating to GM ingredients.

Martin PlayneIn the December issue, we will be featuring new directions for the ABA as we go into the new millennium. Biotechnology and the Wine Industry is the title of our special feature for December - perhaps serving as a timely reminder that there are other industries in Australia who also depend upon biotechnology for their successful development. The stockmarket “buzz” and focus for biotechnology seems to remain with the medical and health industries. It is timely to remember that biotechnology is an enabling technology for many other industry areas. Wine-making is a good example.

Special Features for the Year 2000 and 2001

The following list is for the special features planned. While we normally seek contributions from experts for each special feature, we are also very keen to accept proffered papers relevant to the themes listed. Please contact the editor well in advance if you would like to make such contributions to discuss details and deadlines. The Editor, Dr Martin Playne, can be contacted on: Telephone: (03) 9598 9818; Email: mplayne@netspace.net.au

The Editor would also like to hear from you if you have suggestions for future special features, or would like to co-edit a special feature. The following are the coming special features in the next two issues. Suggested topics are listed for April 2001 and beyond - the order of appearance of these has not yet been finalized.
