LAUNCH OF THE FERMENTATION & BIOPROCESSING INTEREST GROUP (FBIG)This special interest group of the Australian Biotechnology Association (ABA) was previously known as the Victorian Fermentation Special Interest Group (VFSIG). It was formed five years ago in Melbourne, and has held 4 to 6 meetings, student nights, company plant visits each year. Currently, it has some 80 members. There is no membership fee. Members do not have to be members of the ABA to belong. The group has been supported financially by several companies and the ABA. Braun and Crown Scientific have been staunch supporters. In December 2000, members agreed to change the Charter of the group and rename it to reflect the increasing interest of its members in all aspects of bioprocessing, and increasing interest outside Victoria. The new name Fermentation and BioProcessing Interest Group retains the emphasis on fermentation. The new committee, headed by Dr John Power of RMIT University, is planning ahead for a March 2002 national fermentation and bioprocessing conference. Meetings are also being planned for 7 February 2001 at Werribee; for 5 April 2001 a brewery visit; for 7 June 2001; a visit to CSL Bioplasma plant (to be confirmed); for early August, a student night, including senior company speakers; and, in September 2001, a meeting with one or more speakers from the 6th World Congress of Chemical Engineering being held in Melbourne that month. The committee welcomes ideas on functions and meetings, and is keen to collaborate with those in other societies and associations with similar or allied interests. Members of the Committee are: John Power (Chairman), Nick Kotlarski (Secretary), Michael Godfrey, Kylie Henderson, Michelle Edmonds, Ragini Wheatcroft and Martin Playne. Information about the FBIG group can be obtained from the groups secretary, Nick Kotlarski, R&D Manager, Alpharma Animal Health Pty Ltd Phone: (+613)9388 0655; Fax: (+613)9388 1259; e-mail: Nick.Kotlarski@alpharma.com.au We would like to welcome the following new members to the ABA, who have joined since our last issue:
