FROM THE EDITOR

Martin Playne, Senior Editor

Code Number: au01049

In this issue, we have a paper on the future of gene patents by Gavin Recchia, and a full report by Mark Christensen and Ben Johnston on the New Zealand Royal Commission on Genetic Modification. We also have the first of our series of profiles of Corporate Members of AusBiotech. The association now has 84 corporate members, as well as 593 individual members and 57 student members.

We have held over until our next issue the third part of our Special Feature on Fermentation and Bioprocessing. Key papers will not be available to us for another few weeks. We apologise to any readers anticipating the third part of that special feature.

Next year's special feature

Next year, the Special Feature will concentrate on Analytical Biotechnology. We plan to cover this area in the April, June and August issues in 2002. I call for papers in this area. I would also appreciate being contacted soon if you have the intention of submitting a paper for that Special Feature. Papers should follow our normal format for papers and should not exceed four printed pages in total. This represents an article of no more than 3000 words (less if picture, diagrams, and tables are included). All papers should start with a brief summary/abstract of 100-200 words.

Analytical Biotechnology can be broadly defined and includes biochemical instrumentation, diagnostic systems, DNA fingerprinting techniques, and statistical methods. We are particularly interested in technical papers from major instrument manufacturers on new measurement techniques. We are also keen to publish a paper or papers reviewing recent developments and applications of DNA based methods of detection. I look forward to hearing from potential authors.

The new website

I invite readers to view the new AusBiotech website (http://www.ausbiotech.com) which is expected to be launched in early September. The old ABA site will be operational until the commencement of the new site. We are seeking photographs related to biotechnology for use on the site, either as small photographs, or as background photographs appearing behind text. All photographs used will be acknowledged. They can be sent to me at the AusBiotech address.
