FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Tony Coulepis, Executive Director

Code Number: au01069

As we complete one year and commence another, it is appropriate to reflect on the journey that AusBiotech undertook in 2001, and then to look forward to 2002 and the journey ahead.

In terms of the past, 2001 has been a challenging but successful year for AusBiotech, which is best summarised in the Executive Director’s Report which I presented at the AusBiotech Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 27/11/01 in NSW. For those Members who were unable to attend the AGM, the report that I presented at this meeting is reproduced below and provides an overview of AusBiotech’s journey since 1/1/01.

In terms of the future, Peter Riddles has shared some thoughts with you in his President’s Report concerning the strategic outlook for AusBiotech in 2002 which outlines the organisation’s key objectives for the next 12 months. The operational development of AusBiotech and its increasing contribution to Members, is closely associated with the continued implementation of AusBiotech’s threeyear Business Plan titled Growing Australian Biotechnology. The four key elements for AusBiotech’s continued development include the formulation of policies and their implementation, the strengthening of staff resources, the raising of funds, and the implementation of effective management principles in order to better serve Members, stakeholders and the Australian biotechnology industry.

As Members are probably aware from recent email communications, AusBiotech is moving forward to expand its core staff through two new positions, namely, a Finance and Administration Manager and an Information and Marketing Services Manager. These new positions will become operational in January 2002 and will significantly boost AusBiotech’s ability to deliver benefits to Members.

I look forward to working with the new AusBiotech Board to further develop and strengthen the organisation and I congratulate Peter Devine, Samantha O’Connor, Stephan Wellink and Jonathan Wright, for their election to the AusBiotech Board. They join the ongoing Directors, namely, Peter Riddles, John Ballard, Scott Carpenter, Simon Carroll and David Irving, in what I believe will collectively be a dynamic Board to see AusBiotech through to the next level of its development.

Dr Tony Coulepis
