ABA NEWS

NSW Branch

The inaugural meeting of the NSW Branch of the Australian Biotechnology Association was held on 7th December. Membership of the NSW Branch Committee is as follows:

Charles Bailey Department of Biotechnology, UNSW

Andrew Baker Johnson & Johnson Research

Christopher Blanchard  Charles Sturt University

Peter Gray  Department of Biotechnology, UNSW

David Irving  Biotech Australia Pty Ltd

Phillip Lehrbach  Fort Dodge Australia Pty Ltd

Tim Littlejohn eBioinformatics Pty Ltd

Bengt Norrman Biomedoz

Rachel Shepherd Dept. of Cell & Molecular Biology, UTS

Noelle-Ann Sunstrom CRC for Biopharmaceutical Research P/L

Neil Willetts Consultant (ABA Director)

A stimulating series of functions and meetings are planned for the year 2000 and we will keep you informed of these events. During the course of the meeting the following office bearers were elected:

Chairman: Peter Gray

Secretary: Rachel Shepherd

Treasurer: Phillip Lehrbach

Meetings
Organisers: David Irving/Charles Bailey

Liaison with ABA
& NSW State Govt: Neil Willetts

Following the meeting there was an excellent presentation by Keith Hardy and Jim Murray on their recent "Australian Biotechnology Report 1999". The Australian Biotechnology Report is the first detailed report on the Australian Biotechnology industry. The presentation by the authors of the Report and the additional findings that came out of their study have provided an excellent analysis of the current state of the biotechnology industry. The Report is available on the Ernst and Young website (http://www.ey.com.au/).

This Report will hopefully become an annual publication and grow to the prominence of the equivalent report in the US. Certainly the ABA would hope to host an event such as last night's on an annual basis.

We are indebted to Neil Willetts for organising a particularly stimulating evening and to Jamie Callachor, Department of State and Regional Development of the NSW Government, who arranged for the meeting to be held in their magnificent conference room on the top floor of 225 George Street with its magnificent views of the Harbour.

An ABA Email Discussion List

The ABA has created an email list to provide members with information on ABA activities, biotechnology news locally and globally and, importantly, jobs and opportunities for further study. Subscribing to the email list is free.

Currently the list is open only to ABA members. If enough interest is generated, the list will be opened to the broader public, and has the potential of being an important communication tool for the Australian Biotechnology and general communities.

Information (news articles, jobs, questions/answers etc) from medical, agricultural, microbial, mechanical, legal, business or any other area of biotechnology is most welcome. If it interests you, it probably interests someone else in the ABA community.

Subscribing

All ABA members with registered email address were automatically added to the list. However, members need to confirm that they want to be on the email list. So far over 100 people, companies and institutions have been added to the list. However, there are some teething problems. Remember that subscribing is free.

If your email list has changed recently (or you want to have a different address as your preferred email address), even by the smallest detail, you will not be able to confirm the message, as the list server does not recognise you. In this case, all you need to do is send a message to majordomo@lists.netsp ace.net.au with the following text in the body of the email:

subscribe aba

(without your auto signature/address)

No subject is required.

The nominated address will be sent a confirmation message that needs to be sent back to majordomo@lists.netsp ace.net.au, from the address that follows the authenticity code.

Unsubscribing

If at any time you want to be taken off the list send a message to majordomo@lists.netsp ace.net.au with the following body text:

unsubscribe aba

Sending Information

To send a message to the list (or if you have a problem), email it to aba@lists.netspace.net.au

Please make sure that your auto-signature/address is turned off so that it is not included in the posted text.

All information submitted is being moderated to ensure that any inappropriate material is not circulated to all list members (e.g. defamation, irrelevant material, junk, advertising)

GST Implications for ABA Members

Most readers will be aware that Australia is introducing a GST on the 1st July 2000. This will impact on many of the services and activities of the ABA. Consequently, ABA subscriptions and other charges will have to reflect these extra expenses. Our solicitor advises us that the following areas will be affected :

  • Research and development contracts with third parties (industry or government bodies, within or outside of Australia);
  • Agreements in relation to the provision of services (such as consulting or technical services);
  • Any lease agreements for premises or equipment;
  • Any incorporated or unincorporated arrangements including co-operative research centres _ joint ventures are subject to special rules and care must be taken in structuring any such arrangements;
  • Obtaining publication services for books, leaflets, pamphlets and other literature;
  • Preparation of films, video-tapes, records, disks and tapes;
  • Sponsorship of ABA publications, i.e. advertisements in these publications;
  • Charging fees to corporations, persons or bodies which wish to participate in any ABA activity or obtaining any benefit from ABA including membership and journal subscriptions;
  • Raising funds;
  • Subscription to/ amalgamations/ becoming a member of any other corporation, association, body or organisation;
  • Organisation of conferences;
  • Any other activities carried out by ABA for which a fee is charged _ e.g. annual conference, research.

Therefore, please do not be surprised if you see 10% added to your bill for membership and subscription renewals this year.
