Colour atlas and synopis of paediatric dermatology by Sandipan Dhar

R. G. Valia

Code Number: dv03025

Jaypee Publications, Delhi

2003, 126 pages, hard bound, Rs. 995/-

This book by Dr. Sandipan Dhar is the first color atlas of pediatric dermatology from India and is hence welcome. It is more useful for Indian post-graduate students than similar publications from the West. The conditions depicted are varied, encompassing a wide clinical spectrum of diseases seen on the brown-black skin of Indian children. The text is brief, relevant and useful.

I am sure that this atlas will have many future editions and a few suggestions will not be amiss. The atlas has more than 300 color photographs of skin diseases in children. Unfortunately, not all the photographs in this atlas are good, perhaps partly because photographing children is difficult. The clinical features are not clearly seen in many of them; close-ups would be preferable. Also, the patient should be positioned such that the focus is on the clinical condition and the cluttering of photographs with extraneous objects like threads, ornaments, colored clothing and background details should be avoided. Attention must also be given to achieve adequate and uniform light exposure.

The chronological order of the chapters probably needs slight modification. For example, the third chapter, `Melanocytic and vascular naevi' should follow the first one, `Neonatal dermatoses', while `Diseases of the hair and nails' should be followed by `Acne and rosacea'.

This atlas and synopsis of pediatric dermatology is a pioneering effort and the author must be complimented for that. The book should prove useful to post-graduate students as well as practicing dermatologists and pediatricians.
