Letter to the Editor

A Magnanimous Gesture

Dr. Plaban Kumar Biswas

Chamber: 11-B, Indian Mirror Street, Kolkata - 700 013.

Code Number: is02017

Sir,

Alongwith please find a Cheque for Rs. 300/- only on S.B.I., S. M. Sq. Br. No.449173. This my response to your "Editorial Appeal" dated 26.10.02 published in the I.J.S., Vol.64 No.5.

I propose to send the same amount each year as my share of the cost of sending me our Journal, till same time in the future when the cost escalates - which kindly let us know through the I.J.S.

Hope this finds you well. Please note that this is no way is meant to be a slur on the ASI-HQ and administrators, but as a personal act of love and respect for our I.J.S.

Editor Replies

Dear Dr. Biswas,

No words can describe how moved I was when I received your letter - it was like the rising sun dispersing the mists, worries and doubts which beset the Editor of an impoverished Journal.  When I read your letter to all the Mumbai members of the Editorial Board who meet every Monday in the Journal Office, every eye was moist with appreciation and gratitude, not so much for the amount which is so welcome, as for your magnanimity, thoughtfulness and love for the I.J.S.

It is possible that through your simple, gentle, almost self-effacing letter and kind contribution you have shown every member the way of serving the Journal with feeling, love, pride and dignity.

If only 10% of our membership were to follow your exemplary gesture the I.J.S. would be on a firm financial footing.  Will just 10% of our membership accept this challenge?

Dr. Tehemton E. Udwadia
Chairman, Editorial Board, I.J.S.

The Editorial Board warmly appreciates the gesture of the Governing Council to increase the support of the A.S.I. towards the I.J.S. by Rs. 1.5 lacs / year.  However, it does very strongly maintain that to be equitable the contribution must not be ad hoc but on a per member basis, and the contribution be sent on time every time. The Editorial Board agrees that the Journal is not the best medium to discuss sordid finances. This matter is closed.
