Editorial

Looking back, looking forward

The three year term of the current Editorial Board terminates with this, the last issue of 2003. During these three years the Journal has had its fair share of hiccups, but overall has made reasonable progress. Except for one issue, all 18 issues were published on time. Each year the number of articles submitted for publication has increased, the quality improved. The back-log of previous years is largely cleared. A transparent system of peer review was set up in 2001 and an online manuscript management system in 2003, with article proofs sent to all authors for correction before publication. The rapidly increasing number of letters to the Editor reflects the increasing involvement of the membership. In an effort to become self sufficient the revenue generated by the Journal through advertisements, sale of reprints, is increasing very satisfactorily each year. Unfortunately the increase is off-set by increasing cost of paper, postage and the increasing number of copies for the increasing membership. Even so, at the end of three years the Journal has come out in financial balance.

The I.J.S. is indexed/listed with various national and international databases, to name a few, CAB Abstracts, CAB Health, Indian Science Abstracts, IndMed, Expanded Academic ASAP, InforTrac on file, Health and Wellness Research and Pub List, Centre. In October 2003 we took the plunge and have sent the I.J.S for indexing with Index Medicus on time publication of subsequent issues will see our Journal so indexed, this was one of the primary objectives of the Editorial Board. Whilst the Journal has sustained one of its thrust areas i.e. rural surgery, regretfully it could not achieve much for another thrust area, the Surgical Resident, who will be the future of our surgery and our Association.

The membership of A.S.I. confidently looks to the next Editorial Board to maintain the momentum of the Journal, correct past lapses, garner stronger involvement of the membership and give the Association a Journal every member can be proud of. I am sure our confidence in the new Editorial Board will be fully justified over the next three years.

The Chairman of the Editorial Board expresses his gratitude to

1) Mr Homa Petit and the trustees of the B. D. Petit Parsee General Hospital for free use of an air-conditioned office space with a telephone for three years.

2) The entire Editorial Board for their support.

3) Members of the Advisory Board for their enthusiastic involvement and advice.

4) Dr D. K. Sahu of Medknow Publications for his invaluable help in upgrading the journal, improving its layout, establishing an online manuscript management website and for helping in all the indexing efforts.

5) Novelty Printers and Faces Media for their help and support.

6) Dr Ravin Thatte and Soniya Khare of Akshar Consultants for painstakingly copyediting the articles and the proofs.

7) Ms Jyoti, for secretarial assistance and for patiently bearing with all my tantrums. She has been a continuous source of support.

8) By far the biggest vote of gratitude goes to Dr Deepraj Bhandarkar and Dr H. S. Bhanushali who literally ran the Journal, its correspondence, supervised the peer review process, chased the printers and juggled the finances to ensure we had a Journal we felt merited indexing. In these efforts they were ably supported by Dr H. G. Doctor and Dr Satish Dharap. Through it all Dr Bhandarkar has emerged as ready material for editorship of any medical journal.
