Indian Journal of Surgery, Vol. 66, No. 5, September-October, 2004, pp. 304 Letter To Editor Author's reply to Skin staples for securing the mesh in tension free inguinal hernia repair: Should we abandon conventional suture? Garg Chaitanya, Bhatnagar Ashok Department of Surgery, SSG Hospital and Medical College, Baroda, Gujarat Code Number: is04083 Sir, We are glad to have comments from our colleagues across the seven seas. We agree with Dr. Jose that traditional use of suture for mesh fixing should not be abandoned. Our study was undertaken to explore a new mesh fixing technique in an academic institute, inspired by Mills′ et al. Postoperative complications were not the only primary outcome but technical feasibility and time saved were the main outcome. Although the complication rates in both groups were similar in our study, a larger series with a longer follow up is required to evaluate the efficacy of skin stapler, as we had concluded. We are continuing on this technique and results are awaited. A significant volume of hernia surgery in India is done in a rural setup where surgical costs are a major deterrent to innovations. Only cheaper alternatives are feasible.[1] Here the traditional use of sutures is still the mainstay of hernia surgery. REFERENCES
