It gives me great pleasure to pen this foreword for the Journal of Postgraduate Medicine (JPGM). In 1955, JPGM was started by the visionary Dean, Dr. RG Dhayagude to promote publication of research work done by the staff members of the institution. Subsequent to the publication of the first issue in 1955, which primarily had articles from within the institution, the floodgates opened and the journal today has 60% of its articles from India and 40% from outside India. It has also traveled a long way to its present form.

As an associate editor with the journal in the early and mid-90s, I know that the path to date has been laced with trials and tribulations, but they have been overcome to make it one of the finest journals in Asia. It is indeed noteworthy that the journal today has close to 3000 reviewers, an average time of about six weeks from first submission to decision making, is indexed with over 30 databases and continues to strongly advocate its open access policy. Its website is also rated as among the best for Indian journals. It is the first journal in India to have undergraduate student editors on board. The journal is also indexed with the Science Citation Index and from the year 2009, will also be able to generate an Impact Factor.

From the 1 st of July 2007, a new editorial team takes over the reigns of the journal. This team has not only to maintain the high standards set by the predecessors, but also chart their own path and take the journal to even greater heights. They have already outlined their priorities which include among others, strengthening existing sections, maintaining timeliness of publication, promoting the art and science of medical writing among the scientific community and perhaps even make the journal bimonthly at the end of their tenure. For all of this and more, I wish them good luck and much success.
