Obituary

Late Professor Charles L K Ssali

It is with deep sorrow that we report the death of Professor Charles Ssali on 20th July 2004. Charles was born on 3rd September 1930 in Buddu County, Masaka District. He went through Kitasa Primary education then St. Henry’s College, Kitovu for secondary education. In 1953, he had the best Cambridge School Certificate (O Level) results in East Africa. In 1954 he was admitted to Makerere University College for A level in 1960, he obtained MBChB degree.

After internship at Mulago Hospital, he was posted to Entebbe and Bombo Hospitals. In 1964, he won a Central Government Scholarship to study ENT at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

In April 1967, He passed his final Fellowship examination. He returned to Uganda and worked under guidance of Professor Steen. In 1974, Charles was appointed the first Professor and Head of the ENT Department. Some of us were privileged to go through his hands as medical students and still remember his charisma as a young professor of ENT. Between 1979 and 1984, Due to political turmoil and insecurity in Uganda, Charles was in exile in Kenya where he was appointed a Consultant ENT surgeon in Kenyatta National Hospital.

Between 1984 and 1988, Charles in UK where he worked as a consultant in the National Health Services (NHS). He worked in Stevenage General Hospital, Kirkcaldy Fife, Scotland as a consultant ENT surgeon. He was also a consultant in the Royal Infirmary in Carlisle, England. He again worked as ENT consultant together other district hospitals. From 1993, Charles got involved in a controversial private research and treatment of HIV / AIDS. During the course of his research, Charles rubbed shoulder with many involved in AIDS research. Many in the medical professional did not understand him. However to many helpless AIDS victims, he was a hero.

Charles was happily and faithfully married to Margaret Nansamba since 1964 “till death separated them”. Charles left a widow and sons. To Margaret, David Savio, Stephen, Michael, Edward, Fred, Paul, Jane; Christine, Anna Marie, Elizabeth, Catherine, Gloria, Grace, Evelyne, Vasta and Juliet, we extend our deepest condolences and prayers.
