It has been a constant endeavour over the years to improve the standard of the journal by selecting good quality research papers and reviews through a panel of expert peer reviewers and editorial scrutiny. The quality of manuscripts has improved with passage of time. Integration of basic and applied research, clinical and epidemiological studies have reflected in the types of manuscripts submitted to the journal. They have addressed topics of interest for clinical microbiologists and allied health care professionals. Reports of novel resistance genes, increasing antibiotic resistance and hospital acquired infections, and isolation of uncommon organisms have highlighted current concerns in patient care. Several interesting papers on innovative diagnostic techniques and rare case reports have also featured in these issues. As interest and pressure to publish increases among prospective authors, there is a need to be aware of publication ethics and mandates. Most peer reviewed medical journals have certain policies based on the guidelines of Committee for Publication Ethics (COPE) (http://publicationethics.org/guidelines), World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) (http://www.wame.org/resources/resources-for-medical-editors), etc. Several issues come up for consideration while writing a manuscript. General policies and guidelines on authorship, conflict of interest and declaration of sources of funding need to be resolved before submitting a manuscript for publication. Complaints involving prior/multiple publication, plagiarism, falsification of data crop up during an editorial process. Guidelines laid out by the journal′s official owners and governing body often help to resolve these issues with several degrees of punitive action. Indian Journal of Medical Microbiology follows these guidelines and policies. A note has been provided in the instructions to the authors (in this issue). It is hoped that the authors and readers of this journal will abide by these guidelines to uphold high standards of scientific publication in the country.
