Internet resources for diabetes

ABSTRACT

Internet is transforming lives of many people in the world. Nowadays Internet has become one of the most common media to extract information of interest to researchers. The Internet is composed of a large number of smaller interconnected networks called Intranets. These Intranets connect thousands computers enabling them to share information with each other and to share various resources such as powerful super computers, software and databases of information. It has made it possible for people all over the world to effectively and inexpensively communicate with each other. The Internet has become world's biggest library where retrieval of scientific resources is only a mouse click away. The geometric growth in Internet usage is mainly due to the great success of "World Wide Web". Various useful databases on diabetes are already on 'the Net' and many more being added regularly. The present article is an attempt to provide a review of several sites that may be of great significance to the diabetes researchers before execution for new assignment/project.

INTRODUCTION

With the acceleration in pace of biological research, scientists are increasingly becoming more and more dependent on computers to manage the generated informations.[1] The Internet is a worldwide computer network allowing communication among millions of users and access to different resources.[2],[3] The Internet and World Wide Web represent significant advancements for the retrieval and dissemination of literature for the advancement of education, research and industry.

There are an estimated 143 million people worldwide suffering from diabetes,[4] almost five times more than the estimates ten years ago. This number may probably double by the year 2030.[5] Therefore, the human population worldwide appears to be in the midst of an epidemic of diabetes. Reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that diabetes mellitus is one of the major killers of our time, with people in South Asia and Western Pacific being most at risk.[6]

There are two categories of disease; type 1 (Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus [IDDM] and type 2 (Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus [NIDDM]; they affect 5-10% and 90-95% of total population, respectively. It is estimated that incidence of Type 1 diabetes will be about 40% higher in the year 2010 than in 1997[7] and yet there is no identified agent substantially capable of preventing this type of disease.[8],[9],[10] Despite the great have been made in understanding and management in this disease, serious problems like diabetic retinopathy,[11] diabetic nephropathy,[12] and lower extremity amputation[13] continue to confront patients and physicians. The graph of diabetes-related mortality is raising unabated.[14]

Many times we are the first to see the signs, symptoms, and complications of this disease. As the baby-boomers age, the incidence of diabetes is bound to increase since over 40% of people older than 65 years of age have either impaired glucose tolerance or non-insulin dependent diabetes. We all must stay abreast of information about diabetes to keep the feet of our diabetic patients in working order. Through the use of the World Wide Web information is readily and rapidly available for both physicians and patients.

There are many other sites devoted to diabetes on the Internet. Some of these listed here are excellent starting points. To supplement these you can follow the links from the sites you visit or use one of the search engines such as Yahoo or Altavista. The ready availability of information on diabetes, demonstrates the use of the Internet as a valuable source of rapid information transfer. Someday soon you′ll even be able to participate in continuing education activities on this same medium.

Although the Internet offers a number of information sites for diabetes, yet they are hap-hazardous. World Wide Web searching is not more than looking for a selective fish in the ocean. The Internet is not restricted to a particular organization or a place of the country or world. It is providing the information of our interest from the whole world. Hence, an attempt has been made to include all organizations, institutions and associations from all over the world for seeking more information. Most beginners in Internet search are restricted only to some search engines via; Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, MSN search, Info-seek etc that may not provide wide range of information.[15] These are a number of ways in which one can narrow down Internet search. Boolean logic is one of the most common effective way and involves using AND, OR, NOT and parenthesis for grouping.

The diabetes is a very wide area of research and during net surfing many problems are encountered. Besides, finding proper material is not easy, and it takes a long time of searching that is highly uneconomic in terms at money and time. The present review may help to a greater extent in solving this problem and may provide an easy path for searching the targeted information by the diabetes researchers.

Information available on Internet was downloaded with the help of universal search engines viz. Google, Yahoo, Altavista, Rediff, MSN, Infoseek, Pubmed, SCI and BBCI (both CD Rom versiom). We used the following key words in the title field to search the webs, diabetes, diabet, NIDDM, IDDM, MODY, FCPD, hyperglycem, hyperglycaem, diabetes database, diabetes journals and magazines, diabetes organization/association/council/society/institution, diabetes encyclopedia, glucometer, insulin pump, diabetes drugs, diabetes therapy, MRDM, hypoglyceam etc. For our analysis we considered only sites which are more relevant and giving broad information about diabetes in 2004. This is a macroscopic study and the analysis stops at the level of institutions. The URLs were verified between month of 20^th October and 15^th November 2004. The URLs have been collected to provide information broadly to basic research scientists, clinicians, patients etc.

A number of databases on diabetes information are providing required sequential information viz; journal using storage devices (online servers hard disks and compact discs). Most of the information related to diabetes education and research are effectively available on the sites mentioned in Table:1.

Different symposia, seminars, conferences, meetings and other events on diabetes by different organizations, associations and councils at different time intervals can be downloaded from the sites given in Table:2. The popular search engines for diabetes information are listed in Table:3.

Journals and magazines are the ace source of information for diabetes research, treatments and awareness in society. Many medical journals are enlisted some common Internet sites which are free available after some duration of publication. Most important journals/magazine are available on Internet are enlisted in Table:4. Some important encyclopedia available on diabetes are also enlisted in Table:5.

Table:6, Table:7 and Table:8 enlisted some websites which providing the information regarding instruments viz; Glucometer, insulin pumps and drugs manufacturing companies worldwide.

Table:9, Table:10 and Table:11 enlisted the websites which linked with the information for management of diabetic complications, specific sites for diabetic professionals and diabetic patients and their relatives to awareness.
