Foreward

Foreword

Code Number: nd10088

I am happy to forward issue 39 of AJFAND.

First, let me through this FOREWORD, thank all those who graced the 4 th ANEC, which was successfully concluded in Nairobi on October 8, 2010.

It was team work and we at the Local Organizing Committee could not have managed without the co-operation and support of everyone, participants and funders alike. We are grateful; we registered more than 500 participants from 25 African countries, 11 non African countries, and had the honor to welcome Her Excellency Lady Ida Odinga, wife of Kenya′s Prime Minister to the Gala dinner. Results of the evaluation will be shared with all participants and I am sure the hosts of the 5th ANEC (yet to be selected) could benefit from such evaluation. We were happy to host all, and each one of you in Nairobi.

Then I went on to attend the World Food Prize event in Des Moines, Iowa, USA The week was busy, enjoyable with plenty of networking opportunities, at the hospitality of the people of Iowa. If I could, I would wish to put this on my calendar to be able to attend every year. This was my second time, the first one having been some 5 or so years back. I was happy to see so many farmers in attendance and especially women smallholder farmers from Haiti and Zimbabwe who brought to this forum the same message I carry regarding the special circumstances and neglect of women smallholder farmers all over the world.

The Youth Institute on the last day was just wonderful; listening to these high school students′ presentations on their experiences abroad, one can only conclude that it is the only sure way of shaping the thinking of future leaders about as a crucial global issue as world hunger. This time, the level of participation hit more than 1000. Ambassador Kenneth Quinn and his Team at the World Food Prize Foundation are the ones who truly deserve AWARDS. The Award event, for the first time honoring grassroots activists Rev David Beckman of Bread for the World and Jo Luck of Heifer International was colorful and stately. We congratulate them AGAIN.

Well, back to the journal, we need financial support to sustain the journal. Please contact me if you have some good ideas. The journal is serving a crucial cadre of African scholars both young and mature, to provide a forum for them to share their research findings and suggest ways to use science to promote Africa′s development.

I wish you good reading. We also welcome our new reviewers and appreciate continued support that we receive from ALL our reviewers and financial supporters.
