While the incidence of stroke is coming down in western countries, it is showing an alarming rise in India. This is due to increased life span associated with rising trends of hypertension, diabetes and smoking in our population. Major advances have occurred in the last decade both in the treatment and preventive strategies. However nothing can replace public education and the physicians' awareness about the measures to prevent stroke by controlling risk factors and also about the need to get most effective treatment if the stroke occurs. Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad, organized the National Stroke Symposium, on February 2-3, 2002, with the aim of bringing together the physicians and neurologists from different parts of India to discuss the current problems and issues regarding stroke management. Many stroke experts from India and abroad participated. The symposium was endorsed by the International Stroke Society as a major regional stroke educational event. This special supplement of Neurology India focuses on the topics discussed in the National Stroke Symposium and is basically a distillate of contemporary knowledge about stroke. We are very grateful to Prof. S. Prabhakar, editor Neurology India to accede to our request to dedicate this supplement of the journal to Stroke. We hope this issue will impart momentum to the stroke movement in India, in terms of stroke education, management and research.
