Professor Des Raj Gulati joined the Postgraduate Institute for Medical
Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh, in 1962 as an Assistant Professor.
He had the unique distinction of starting both the departments of Neurology
and Neurosurgery at this prestigious Institute and bringing them to national
eminence. After 1969, he dedicated himself exclusively to the department
of Neurological Surgery. An Alumnus of the McGill University, Montreal
Institute of Neurology, Canada, he had the privilege of being trained
under heavy weights like Professors Penfield, Rasmussen and Cone. His
pioneering work on brain edema with Professor Pappius has been extensively
quoted. A graduate from the Lahore Medical College, Prof Gulati did his
Masters in Surgery from Amritsar and was on the panel of the board of
several leading academic organizations of the country, including I.C.M.R.,
National Medical Academy, etc. He was elected President of the Neu rological
Society of India in 1980. He was the Dean of PGIMER from 1980 to 1983
and also served as Acting Director of PGIMER. An academician to the core,
he was a rigorous taskmaster with capability of scrutinizing the most
minor patient details with ease. He was both adored and loved by his
juniors and students alike. A multifaceted personality, Dr Gulati was
a man with a large heart, a broad warm smile and gentle, soft speech.
Several of his juniors and his students occupy and head departments of
international repute, both within and outside the country. We have lost
the father of neurosciences of this region.
We pray that his soul may rest in peace.
