With profound grief, we share information regarding the demise of Professor H. S. Swamy, [Figure - 1] former Professor and Head of the Department of Neurology at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore.

Dr. Swamy was born on 9 th May 1938 in Hassan district, Karnataka. Following his post graduation in internal medicine, he joined Karnataka state government services in 1968 and later chose neurology to further his career. He was the first postgraduate candidate to have had training in neurology at NIMHANS. After successful completion of DM training in neurology, he joined as faculty at NIMHANS in the year 1974 and continued to serve the institute till his superannuation in May 2001.

As a teacher, he was very systematic in his approach and loved bedside teaching. He was very particular in training postgraduates of internal medicine, psychiatry and pediatrics coming to NIMHANS from other institutions. He could teach any aspect of neurology to postgraduates, most remarkably, the neuroradiology and finer aspects of movement disorders. He was a life-long learner and would attend almost all the scientific meetings and participate actively in deliberations.

He was a very compassionate physician taking care of very poor and not so poor alike. Dr. Swamy had untiring stamina in providing services at out-patient level and emergency room. He assisted in getting free medications from the institute to as many patients as one could imagine. During the last few months of his carrier at NIMHANS, he would regularly visit OPD block to ensure that no deserving patient was turned down.

Despite his commitment to students and patients, he also encouraged many postgraduates to carry out research. He strongly believed and practiced as well that the clinical research should essentially be a byproduct of patient care services. He had nearly 40 publications in national and international journals, notable among them being related to Wilson's disease and post antirabies vaccination related neurological complications.

He had a lot of qualities that one could imbibe. In a nutshell, he could be described as caring, compassionate and committed teacher who shaped and trained nearly 100 neurologists for our country.

After retirement from NIMHANS, Dr. Swamy served as Professor of Neurology at KIMS Hospital, Bangalore, till a few months back. Following a brief medical illness, Dr. H. S. Swamy, more popularly known to us as "HSS", passed away on 17 th September 2010 at his residence in Bangalore. His death is a big loss to the neurology fraternity.
