Ltd., New Delhi, India Year: 2011 Pages: 429 Cost: [INSIDE:1] 1195/- Emergencies in Neurology edited by Mamta Bhusham Singh and Rohit Bhatia is a unique handbook for practicing neurologists in the country, which contains the latest evidence-based approach in both the clinical diagnosis and management of critical care neurology. This multi-author book reviews details in nearly all aspects of the current diagnosis and management of common neurological emergencies. Written by experts in the field of emergency neurology, it is clearly organized with classification, clinical approach to the problem, essential investigations and a detailed discussion on management. Controversies in the management of certain acute neurological problems in specific clinical settings have been clearly brought out by the authors. This book contains 22 chapters devoted to the common emergencies in neurology like stroke, meningitis, encephalitis, acute neuromuscular problems, headache, seizure, increased intracranial pressure , etc. Moreover, the book contains chapters on "movement disorders in the emergency", "neuro-oncological emergencies" and "neurosurgical interventions in neurological emergencies" etc. which are not found in other textbooks on emergency neurology. I found the chapters on stroke, viral encephalitis and acute neuromuscular emergencies particularly useful. Although there may be individual points within chapters on which disagreement is possible, the authors have thoughtfully offered some practical approaches in such situations. All said and done, I am forced to point out certain factual errors as well as some inadvertent mistakes in labeling figures which I hope will be corrected and added as an addendum to this edition and should be corrected in the future editions. The electroencephalogram figures given are too small for the reader to understand the abnormalities. These should ideally be enlarged in the future editions. The chapter on bacterial meningitis should ideally include treatment of bacterial meningitis in special situations like immunocompromised states and in neurosurgical patients. Overall this book has a number of strengths including excellent author selection, practical clinical approach to the problems, good use of tables summarizing the essentials, and evidence-based management quoting landmark studies in each field of emergency neurology. The topics chosen are timely and of interest to practicing neurologists who have to manage these common neurological problems. The book succeeds in its aim of being relevant to practicing neurologists as well as to trainees alike.
