Memórias do
Instituto Oswaldo Cruz will complete 93 years next April.
It was founded in 1909
by Oswaldo Cruz, who directed the Institute at the time and who, today, is considered
the patron of Brazilian Public Health. During this period, Memórias
had 96 volumes published and also a number of supplements, especially from 1980
on, when the periodical went through a modernization process. In volume 75,
of the same year, Memórias introduced, for the first time, the
figure of an Editor, along with an Assessorship and an Editorial Board, constituted
of fourteen external members, among the most distinguished professionals of
the national scientific community, and ten members among the most representative
researchers of the very Institute. From that time on, there have been more opportunities
for publishing works from different institutions, either national or international,
about various subjects, such as parasitology, microbiology, biochemistry and
molecular biology, pathology, entomology, malacology, biology and, also, infectious
and parasitical diseases epidemiology.
For the last two decades,
Memórias had three other editors, besides the current one: Drs
Leonidas de Mello Deane, Eloi de Souza Garcia e Hooman Momen. In 1988, in order
to substitute the Chief of Secretariat, it was created for the function of Administrative
Editor, held by Marly de Carvalho Willcox until 1995 and, since 1996, by Luciane
de Carvalho Soares. The Editors, the Editorial Board, the International Advisory
Board (created by Homan Momen) and the Secretariat staff were, and still are,
responsible for the modernization process and scientific level improvement of
Memórias, which, today, is the first more cited tital among all
periodicals published in Latin America and the fourth, throughout the world,
among journals specialized in Tropical Medicine. Although it is considered a
traditional biomedical journal, Memórias pioneered in developing
an on-line version, if compared with other developing countries' scientific
publications.
To celebrate ninety years
of existence, Memórias produced a CD-ROM, which contains the titles
of all articles published since its foundation, in 1909, as well as the full
texts and the illustrations of the articles published from 1997 so far. The
CD has also a search tool, that allows the user to access all information available
and may be ordered by the following e-mail: memorias@pobox.com.
From the present volume,
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, maintaining its tradition,
exhibits a new layout, a more economic format and a better quality paper. Besides,
each volume will bring a "guest review", presenting a theme of great
social and scientific relevance, in order to discuss different points of view.
Considering current patterns,
Memórias usually publishes its articles within a very acceptable
interval of time; however, as internet communication is extremely fast, the
editorial process will have to be changed, in middle term. The way of receiving
manuscripts and correspondence with authors and members of the Editorial Board
should be modified, so that administrative tasks become more dynamic and less
bureacratic.
