Among the published papers in that year, 54 were on epidemiology of parasites and infectious diseases; 49 on general biology; 31 on systematics; 16 on diagnosis; 12 on clinical and therapeutic studies; 11 on control; 11 on immunology and immunogenetic; 9 on experimental therapy; 7 on molecular characterization; 5 on experimental pathology; 5 reviews; 3 editorials; 2 technical reports; and 1 book review.

In the 8th International Symposium on Schistosomiasis, 8 papers were published on intermediate host; 5 on immunology; 4 on epidemiology; and 1 opening address.

From the Review Section we would like to point out the following titles: (i) A Critical Review on Chagas Disease Chemotherapy [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(1): 3-24]; (ii) HIV-1 Polymorphism: a Challenge for Vaccine Development [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(2): 143-150]; (iii) Some Aspects of Protozoan Infection in Immunocompromised Patients [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(4): 443-447]; (iv) The Impact of Chagas Disease Control in Latin America [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(5): 601-612]; (v) Experimental Models of Schistosoma mansoni Infection [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(7): 915-940].

In the General Biology Section we should merit special attention to the papers: (i) Interaction of Diocleinase Lectins with Glycoproteins Based in Surface Plasmon Resonance [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(2): 275-279]; (ii) Oral Susceptibility to Yellow Fever Virus of Aedes aegypti from Brazil [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(3): 437-439]; (iii) Aggregation Behaviour and Interspecific Responses in Rhodnius prolixus Stäl [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(4): 569-571].

Three papers in the Diagnosis Section should also be highlighted: (i) Detection of Hepatitis B Virus Antigens in Paraffin-embebeded Liver Specimens from Amazon Region, Brazil [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(1): 105-107]; (ii) A Heminested Polymerase Chain Reaction for Detection of Brazilian Rabies Isolated from Vampire Bats and Herbivores [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(1): 109-111]; (iii) Mtp-40 Alpha Antigen Gene Fragment Amplification for Detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Colombian Specimens [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(8): 1157-1163].

Concerning the Control Section the following papers are worth of notice: (i) Detection and Characterization of Rotavirus G and P Types from Children Participating in a Rotavirus Vaccination Trial in Belém, Brazil [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(1): 113-117]; (ii) Effect of the Contents and Form of Rabies Glycoprotein on the Potency of Rabies Vaccination in Cattle [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(2): 265-268]; (iii) Study of the Safety, Immunogenicity and Efficacy of Attenuated and Killed Leishmania (Leishmania) major Vaccine in a Rhesus Monkey (Maccaca mulata) Model of Human Disease [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(7): 1041-1048].

In Molecular Biology Section we point out the papers: (i) Genetic Diversity in Brazilian Population of Aedes albopictus [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(6): 871-875]; (ii) Complete Nucleotide Sequence Analysis of a Brazilian Dengue Virus 2 Strain [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(7): 991-995].

The paper Fibrogenesis and Collagen Reabsorption in the Heart and Skeletical Muscle of Callomys callosus Experimentally Infected with Trypanosoma cruzi [Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(5): 703-710] on the Experimental Pathology Section shall have a special mention.

Finally, we would like to emphasize the papers presented at the 8th International Symposium on Schistosomiasis, published in the Epidemiology, Intermediate Host, Mollecular Characterization, and Immunology Sections of Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 97(Suppl. I): 3-189.
